Een deel van 2025 stond in het teken van de evaluatie van het instituut door een onafhankelijke commissie. Als voorbereiding schreef het MT een zelf-evaluatie en strategisch plan voor de periode 2025-2030. Half mei vond het bezoek van de evaluatiecommissie onder voorzitterschap van Birgit Meyer (Universiteit Utrecht) plaats.

Hare Majesteit Koningin Máxima bezoekt op dinsdagochtend 26 mei het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal,- Land- en Volkenkunde (KITLV) in Leiden. Dit jaar viert het KITLV haar 175-jarig bestaan. Het KITLV is een onderzoeksinstituut van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW) en werd in 1851 opgericht.

The 16th Silvia de Groot Fund research grant was awarded to Danick Trouwloon for her research on Curaçao and the wider Caribbean and Ine Apapoe for her research on Suriname. The aim of the fund is to financially support young Caribbean students or researchers with their research on Caribbean history or culture.

The 5th Philippus Corts Fund grant was awarded to Bernard Kleikamp for his music project and to Niels Mathijssen and Wengki Ariando, Louie Buana and Adrian Perkasa for their book projects. The goal of the fund is to support research and publications on the shared history of Indonesia and The Netherlands in the period 1602–1949.

Karwan Fatah-Black is benoemd tot UNESCO Leerstoelhouder Comparative History of Slavery and the Transition to Citizenship aan de Universiteit Leiden (UL). Karwan is senior onderzoeker bij het KITLV en historicus aan de UL. Deze nieuwe leerstoel onderzoekt de overgang van slavernij naar burgerschap in vergelijkend perspectief.

Reggy Simson van Radio Keti Koti ging in gesprek met Francio Guadeloupe en Sam Liverpool over diverse onderwerpen: de in eind maart aangenomen VN resolutie die de trans-Atlantische slavenhandel als ‘de ernstigste misdaad tegen de menselijkheid’ bestempelt, diversiteit en slavernij. 123 van de 193 VN-lidstaten, waaronder alle Afrikaanse en Caribische landen, stemden voor de VN resolutie.

We openen onze deuren en organiseren in samenwerking met de Universitaire Bibliotheken Leiden (UBL) een publieksfestival ter ere van ons 175-jarig bestaan. In het veelzijdige programma komen elementen samen die de Vereniging en het Instituut typeren.

A blog by Panggah Ardiyansyah, a former fellow who received the NIAS-NIOD-KITLV fellowship: Moving Objects, Mobilising Culture in the Context of (De)colonisation. The fellowship enabled Panggah to study the provenance of a Javanese manuscript, copied in 1930 and originating from Sendang Duwur, a 16th-century Islamic complex in East Java.

On 12 March Francio Guadeloupe (KITLV), appointed as KNAW Professor of Public Anthropology of Kingdom Relations, delivered his inaugural lecture 'Reweaving Dutch Caribbean studies' at the University of Amsterdam. In his lecture he argued that it is impossible to consider the Dutch Caribbean islands and the Netherlands as separate worlds with distinct native cultures.
